In mid-February nine Spokes spent 5 days in Fitzgerald National Park staying at Quaalup Homestead Wilderness Retreat. We had been waiting months for our Orca adventure. Seven of us braved the very rough ocean to travel 70kms offshore to the great Southern Ocean and the Bremer Canyon which is 1000 metres deep and is where the Orcas are to be found. It was so exciting when the call was made that there was a "predation event" happening. The orcas were chasing a beaked whale at top speed and the boat surges and takes off too. Water is splashing over the sides, people are being drenched, staff are racing around to cover them with towels or help them move to shelter and the excitement is growing. People shout and exclaim as the orcas dive in and out of the waves. They are so beautiful with their black shiny bodies and pure white patches. Next the water is stained with a green smudge which is a mixture of oil and blood. Above the water the shoalwaters and even a couple of albatross are swooping and diving for their share of the feast! Definitely an experience we won't forget!
