Roley Pool Walks

A crisp and sunny morning for our walks by the upper . reaches of the Canning River. As we wound our way through forest and orchards we were reminded to look for the avenue of wattle lining Canning Mills Road - very pretty but weedy wattles from the East! Oops, we overshot the bridge – not over the side but further up the winding road than we meant to go. The north side gravel path was wide enough for two, mostly flat with a couple of short but steepish ups and down – too much for Martha’s walker and she retreated. A multitude of birds sang from the treetops, flowers were in short supply – some hardenbergia, trimaleium and Swan River myrtle, as well as smaller unidentifiable flowers – bridal creeper ran rampant. From time to time we caught a glimpse of the three intrepid walkers on the south side, their path hedged in by a tallish granite hill and a jumble of boulders. The water at Rocky Pool was still and reflected trees on the hillside. It was easy to see why it was popular swimming hole in days gone by, the surroundings being smoothish flat granite with an obvious spot for a diving board. On the other side, after a short boardwalk, it was rough going as walkers picked their way through rocks and boulders, taking an unexpected detour down a steep path and back up a steeper path to the main track. Then across stunning granite flattish rocks to the spa pool – it looked inviting but not warm enough to try. Serendipitously, both groups returned to the bus at roughly the same time. Promised a coffee stop if we found a café - a shout went up as we passed a sign that said “sourdough and coffee” as we stopped at the STOP sign at Brockton Highway. Another U turn to find a very, small shop “take away” selling homemade preserves, bread, snacks a small selection of sweet things and coffee which we enjoyed at picnic tables the trees.
